C’est parce qu’elle est un organe de conservation et de transmission de la vérité qu’il y a là un extrême danger pour ceux qui sont comme moi vulnérables à l’excès aux influences sociales. Car ainsi ce qu’il y a de plus pur et ce qui souille le plus, étant semblables et confondus sous les mêmes mots, font un mélange presque indécomposable.

Il existe un milieu catholique prêt à accueillir chaleureusement quiconque y entre. Or je ne veux pas être adoptée dans un milieu, habiter dans un milieu où on dit « nous » et être une partie de ce « nous », me trouver chez moi dans un milieu humain quel qu’il soit. En disant que je ne veux pas je m’exprime mal, car je le voudrais bien ; tout cela est délicieux. Mais je sens que cela ne m’est pas permis. [Step 2. Steiner's Sainte Simone is a review of an anthology called Simone Weil's Philosophy of Culture. Two quotes:]

Is there any philosopher outside Marx (a constant presence in Weil) who has striven as stringently to grasp the implications -- psychological, social, physical, political, but also, in a genuine sense, philosophic -- of work in the factory, of the "laborious" technological condition of modern men and women?

[...] Martin Andic takes up this critical theme of "imagination". Persuasively, he expounds Weil's lifelong summons to concreteness, her insistence, surely right, that abstractions, spurious ideological absolutes, and the rhetorical delusions on which our politics feed, foster man's inhumanity to man. (There are suggestive affinities between Weil's language-critique and that of Orwell, under sometimes comparable circumstances.) / But, as Professor Andic points out, this critique is, in Weil's case, again "theological". It relates to the necessary "decreation" of the collective "We" -- the locus of the political: "The devil in us is the 'We,' or rather the 'I' with a halo or 'We' about it, for it is the imagination that makes us want to be like God without God, like him in his power not his love, and that bestows upon us a fictitious divinity by putting us at the centre of the universe in space and time, values and being."

[Not amending "halo or 'We'" any more -- these all concur in it, so clearly Mendes Flohr and Steiner are quoting accurately. Steiner presents this as a paraphrase made by Andic, not as a citation by Weil. Now we have to keep following the trail to Andic, "Discernement and the Imagination" in Simone Weil's Philosophy of Culture ed. Richard Bell. [[Weil against Durkheim is part of the context... that's for another cup.]] So here's Step 3, Andic:]

[Andic gives a citation, the ultimate citation, finally Weil herself. It's still possible that the "We" as halo is Weil's invention. N is the Notebooks, trans. Arthur Wills, London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 2 volumes, 1956. (and it's "halo or 'We'" again. So, finding the same edition of the notebooks wasn't that easy. used pdfscissors and ocrmypdf (which uses tesseract) to get it searchable, and then immediately saw that it was right there, where it should be, page 308. Beauty. A part of matter which, through the senses, renders spiritual perfection sensible.

[meanwhile "or else" is a bit of a problem, and I suspect that Andic was right to clip it. A philosophical writer like Simone Weil would not add an "or else" for an extra case; she adds it to tell you what "We" is. The devil says "We," that is, he says "I" with a halo... But it doesn't seem easy to pirate the Cahiers this afternoon, and my cup is already too tall for anybody (coucou!) to finish.]
